MMG Kinsevere Strengthens Tailings Management as DRC Copper and Cobalt Production Expands
MMG Kinsevere is highlighting the importance of long-term tailings management as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) expands copper and cobalt production and mining operations become increasingly dependent on critical infrastructure.
The company shared its experience in managing tailings storage facilities during the third annual conference of the Congolese Committee on Large Dams (CCGB), held in Kolwezi from August 27 to 29, 2026.
The conference brought together experts, mining companies and government representatives to discuss dam safety, risk management and the sustainability of critical infrastructure.
At Kinsevere, MMG currently manages four tailings storage facilities at different stages of their operational life cycle. One facility is inactive, two are operational and a fourth is under development.
The company is also expanding one of its existing facilities to accommodate requirements associated with the processing of copper sulphide ore as the operation continues to develop.
MMG emphasises that effective tailings management requires extensive planning well before construction begins. This includes technical studies, resource mobilisation and consideration of operational and climatic conditions.
Construction quality and continuous technical monitoring are also central to the management of the facilities. Water management forms another key component, with measures including process-water recycling, seepage control and groundwater monitoring.
Gaby Yalala, Superintendent responsible for tailings storage facilities at MMG Kinsevere, says tailings management needs to be considered across the entire life cycle of an installation, from initial design and construction through operation, closure and rehabilitation.
This approach is intended to strengthen infrastructure safety, protect the environment and support the long-term sustainability of mining operations.
MMG’s approach is aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), an international framework for improving the governance and management of risks associated with mine tailings.
The company’s participation in the CCGB conference highlights the growing importance of infrastructure management as mining operations expand. While production volumes often receive the most attention, tailings facilities and other supporting infrastructure play a critical role in maintaining safe, reliable and sustainable operations.
As global demand for copper, cobalt and other critical minerals continues to rise, effective management of mining waste and associated infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for companies operating in the DRC.
